World

I have had unease for a while now, that much of the popular talk about the Law of Attraction seems to be based on self-centeredness.

With this post I hope to prompt more lateral thinking when it comes to the good old Law of Attraction (LOA), and wise, heart-based application of the LOA, for the sake of the world.

Our thoughts are very powerful, hence the power of the Law of Attraction. However, “ego” is also a powerful force. Ego can use the mind to justify almost anything for its own ends – even how the law of attraction should be used.

Why Does It Matter?

My concern is that applying the LOA principles with a narrow perspective can perpetuate many of the negatives in our Western society, such as fear, aversion and selfishness. I feel that often, we are trying to use the LOA to merely polish the edges of our already very privileged lives.

With vague thoughts about writing this post, I was prompted into action by one of the comments I received when I posted this slide show in a forum recently. This presentation of images was voted “Email of the year”, and recipients are urged to spread it far and wide. It shows powerful images of the extent of poverty and suffering in the world, contrasted with images of extreme good fortune, which many of us take for granted. As viewers, we naturally feel a little uncomfortable, as we are not only shown suffering, but it also it pointedly highlights much of our Western discontent and spoilt attitudes – DESPITE the ABUNDANCE we have.

What’s a Dangerous Email?

The comment that reignited my concerns read “Dangerous email”. When I queried this, the reply was that we don’t want to focus on what we don’t want for the world”. Certainly this is a fundamental aspect of the LOA, and I appreciate the gist. However,

at which point does “not focusing on a problem” slip into blissfully and selfishly “keeping your head in the sand”?

Far from focusing on the negatives in the world, I see such a presentation as a powerful vehicle for fostering three vitally needed positive qualities.

These three qualities have the power to change the world:

  • Contentment
  • Gratitude
  • Compassion

Ultimately, greater contentment, gratitude and compassion lead to greater happiness for all. Both science and spirituality alike present strong evidence supporting this. These are the qualities on which we need to focus. They can allow us to apply the Law of Attraction from the heart, and from a non-selfish viewpoint, bringing a compounding positive effect in the world.

So before we avert our eyes for fear of the LOA working in unwanted ways, let’s apply The Law of Attraction wisely. After all, how would any of the wonderful humanitarian triumphs have been achieved without first focusing on the problem itself? As I heard Jack Canfield, LOA expert saying live just yesterday, the LOA doesn’t just magically make things happen, it requires commitment and then real action to change things.

Whilst some people have innate gratitude and are naturally committed to helping those less fortunate, many of us need regular reminders to jolt us out of our own little self-centred existence. To me, the Email of the Year is a wonderful opportunity for that.
